Frequently asked questions.
Can you really change your accent?
Yes! It is absolutely possible to change your accent so that you speak more clearly. It does, however, take commitment and lots of practice! I have worked with hundreds of students who have put in the time and effort and have achieved the results they were after. In class, you will notice improvements immediately. You will start hearing differently, noticing things that you had never noticed before and be able to change the sounds you make with a few small adjustments. How quickly you progress and whether the changes become permanent largely depends on how much you practice.
How long will it take to change my accent?
You have practised your mistakes literally millions of times, so there is no quick fix for changing your accent. You will make noticeable improvements almost immediately while you are focussing on your corrections in class, but you will need to continue practising for several months to make sure that your changes become permanent.
I often compare the process with going to the gym. If you decide you want a flat stomach, you might join a gym and hire a personal trainer. She will teach you how to do a sit-up. However, knowing how to do a sit-up is not going to get you a flat stomach. You actually have to go home and do your sit-ups! And much better than doing 3 hours of sit-ups on a Saturday is doing a few minutes of sit-ups every single day. The practise videos in this course are all less than a minute long. And much like the gym, after around 2 months, you will start to notice some real changes in your everyday speech.
My approach aims to maximise efficiency in your improvements, but you must be willing to commit to regular practice over a period of time. I guarantee that after your course, you will have learnt about key areas that are causing you the most difficulty, you will understand the difference between what you are doing and what a native speaker does and you will have learnt the techniques you need to make changes.
Is a group or individual course right for me?
Time, budget and personal preference will affect whether a group or individual course is right for you.
Group classes are a great way to begin your journey to speaking with more clarity, confidence and credibility. They are the most cost effective way of covering all the information you need to improve your pronunciation. Another advantage is that you can develop your listening skills much more quickly through the mistakes and corrections of your classmates. You will need to be able to commit to attending class every week at the same time for the duration of the course.
Individual classes are focussed on you, your goals and your specific difficulties. They allow us to plan the structure of the course so that areas that need improving most are targeted first, allowing for more time to practice as the course progresses. In bespoke courses, we can work with materials relevant to your actual life, such as interview answers or presentations. Individual courses also offer more flexibility with scheduling.
Selecting the right course for you depends on your budget, your schedule and whether you prefer to learn with others or alone.
How many people will there be in my group?
There will be a maximum of 5 students in your online group class. This is to ensure that everyone gets sufficient individual attention and practice, meaning that it is still possible to spend extra time on areas that individuals are having difficulty with.
Where are classes held?
Individual and group classes are currently online to clients in the UK and all over the world.
In 2021, I hope to resume face-to-face sessions.
